AppleCare Cost Calculator: Is AppleCare+ Worth It?
AppleCare+ is one of the most debated purchases in the Apple ecosystem. The plan costs roughly $99–$399 upfront or $2–$25 per month depending on the device. But the question that actually matters is simpler: will you save more in repairs than you spend on the plan?
Our free AppleCare Cost Calculator helps you answer that in one click. It compares the total cost of AppleCare+ (plan premium plus service fees) against the out-of-warranty repair cost you would face without coverage — then shows a 3-way comparison against AppleCare One and self-insuring, so you can see which option is cheapest for your exact device.
Important Note on Pricing
AppleCare+ prices and repair costs vary by region, device model, storage tier, and time. A tool that presents one exact figure as universal would be misleading. Our calculator therefore uses typical reference ranges drawn from commonly reported prices, and gives you the option to enter the exact figures from Apple's site for a more precise estimate. Always confirm current prices at Apple's official AppleCare page before making a decision.
How the Break-Even Estimate Works
The logic is straightforward. Cost with AppleCare+ equals the plan premium plus the service fee for each incident. Cost without equals the out-of-warranty repair cost multiplied by the number of incidents. The difference is your estimated savings — or your estimated loss.
For example, using typical figures: an iPhone Pro plan runs around $259 over two years. A screen replacement out of warranty is roughly $349, but only $29 with coverage. After one incident, the plan is close to break-even. After two, the coverage typically saves money. Independent repair-shop data suggests that roughly four in ten smartphone owners experience an accidental damage event within two years — which is why the plan is popular among users who drop their phones regularly.
3-Way Comparison: AppleCare+ vs AppleCare One vs Self-Insure
The calculator shows three options side by side for your device:
AppleCare+ (individual plan). You pay the plan premium for your single device, plus the per-incident service fee each time you make a claim. This is the traditional approach and works well for a single high-value device.
AppleCare One (bundle). A subscription that covers up to three devices for around $19.99 per month, with each additional device adding roughly $5.99. When split across three devices, the per-device cost is often lower than buying individual plans — especially for iPhones, iPads, and Watches.
Self-insure. You pay no premium at all. Instead, you put the same monthly amount into a dedicated savings fund and use it to cover repairs if they happen. If you never damage your device, you keep 100% of the money. If you do, you pay the full repair cost from your fund — but you also keep any unused balance.
Which Devices Typically Benefit Most
Coverage tends to make the most sense for devices you carry daily and that are expensive to repair. iPhone Pro models, iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and Apple Vision Pro all have out-of-warranty repair costs that exceed the plan premium by a wide margin. For these devices, a single accident is usually enough for the plan to pay for itself.
For devices that are cheaper to repair or that rarely leave a desk — Apple TV, Mac Studio, base iPhone models, and AirPods — self-insuring is often more cost-effective. The Device Reference tab shows typical ranges for all current devices so you can see where yours falls.
